Flatterland Patterns 01

I’m currently working on one of my last university projects! It basically involves creating some new design proposals for the book Flatterland (which I dare you to read).

For one of my proposals I am placing every letter into a square, then all the letters for each word are also arranged in a square. Yep…

More later, if my eyes haven’t died.

(Oh I have some mega exciting news which I can’t wait to share – Don’t you just hate it when people do that? I couldn’t help myself though!)

Moving into the Window

Ted Baker Window

So after two weeks of solid working, it was moving in day! It took us approximately from 10am to 6pm to complete the whole display with a quick lunch break inbetween.

Tom was kind enough to give us a hand with the window vinyl.

Dollhouse furniture

Dollhouse furniture

Here is some of the dollhouse furniture that Andy’s family enough were generous enough to lend us. I’ve never really seen a lot of dollhouse furniture before, but it really is so beautiful and delicate.

I couldn’t believe the detail that goes into making all the items, made me want to start my own dollhouse collection, although I think I’m a bit too clumsy to handle all the pieces. When we were adding all the interiors of the boxes, I kept crashing into things!

Ted Baker Window Display

Ted Baker Window Display

This is a recently finished project by Andy Colclough, Sam Wood and myself for submission to the YCN Awards that after two weeks of solid working early morning to late evening, we are very proud of!

It’s a brief set by Ted Baker to create a window display for their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection without using any of those stereotypical Autumn ideas, so our display ended up being themed around birdboxes and dollhouses – bringing the outdoors in.

As this was quite a hands on project (barely any computer use which was a refreshing change), I’ve got some images of the process to show you.

Sketch 01

Initial thoughts, the main one being ‘none autumnish’.

Sketch 02

Moving on to the final theme which was originally thought to be treehouses.

Sketch 03

Sketch 04

Lots of sketches for various roof styles.

Boxes

Thanks to my dad for helping us out with all the MDF boxes!

Freshly painted boxes took over the whole house.

Aging boxes

Once the first coat of paint was dry, all of the boxes were given a second coat in a dark brown, then once that was also dry, we sanded all thirty one boxes down with wire wool to give them an antique look. A small FYI for anyone thinking of using wire wool – it will get everywhere and a dust sheet will achieve nothing as the wool is so fine when it falls apart that it will go through the sheet.

Photos of the display going into the window tomorrow!

(You may have noticed none RSS subscribed readers or you lovely commentors, that the blog layout has changed to match my portfolio. The sidebar needs all its content added back into it, like links etc but check out the collapsing archive plugin I added with its awesome smooth expanding. I don’t know what to think about the change really, okay/hate/don’t care?)

The History of Mr Polly

Apr 17.10 / Work in Progress

Following on from my previous post, here are the examples of the previous versions I’d done before. I’d originally wanted to create quite a bright and bold set of covers but sometimes things just don’t do it.

Orion Book Covers

Apr 15.10 / Design, Illustration

Orion Books

Another project to show you, this time a series of book hardback covers for some novels by HG Wells. I quite liked designing these covers – I even enjoyed physically making the hardback covers despite a very bad back from sitting on the floor all night surrounding by all sorts of tape, glue and paper.

If you’re interested in these, then there are a few more pictures of them over at my portfolio.

For this project, I’ve got some previous designs that I scrapped for various reasons and as I’ve been posting a lot of finished work lately I’m thinking of posting the designs that didn’t make the cut, sort of to show my process. Thoughts anybody?

Legendary Burgers Inside

Just a small project to show you, playing around with some acronyms of L,B & I (Lost Boys International). I’m most likely going to make it into a bigger project when I have the time because I quite enjoyed drawing these out (they make me feel summery!) so I’ll have more of an explanation to it, but for now they’re just series of posters for the creative agency LBi.
