Crit Notebook

A while back I posted some scans from the crit notebook I kept throughout the second and third year of university, so now I’ve finished, I scanned in a few more pages.

I will admit, to begin with I wasn’t particularly that bothered about using it to record any notes of thoughts down that involved work – but after sticking with it for so long, I’m quite glad I have it around and now I’ve finished, I’ve started a new one for me to use for all job and work placement related things, or anything that involves work in general.

Ted Baker Window Display

Ted Baker Window Display

This is a recently finished project by Andy Colclough, Sam Wood and myself for submission to the YCN Awards that after two weeks of solid working early morning to late evening, we are very proud of!

It’s a brief set by Ted Baker to create a window display for their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection without using any of those stereotypical Autumn ideas, so our display ended up being themed around birdboxes and dollhouses – bringing the outdoors in.

As this was quite a hands on project (barely any computer use which was a refreshing change), I’ve got some images of the process to show you.

Sketch 01

Initial thoughts, the main one being ‘none autumnish’.

Sketch 02

Moving on to the final theme which was originally thought to be treehouses.

Sketch 04

Lots of sketches for various roof styles.

Boxes

Thanks to my dad for helping us out with all the MDF boxes!

Freshly painted boxes took over the whole house.

Aging boxes

Once the first coat of paint was dry, all of the boxes were given a second coat in a dark brown, then once that was also dry, we sanded all thirty one boxes down with wire wool to give them an antique look. A small FYI for anyone thinking of using wire wool – it will get everywhere and a dust sheet will achieve nothing as the wool is so fine when it falls apart that it will go through the sheet.

Photos of the display going into the window tomorrow!

(You may have noticed none RSS subscribed readers or you lovely commentors, that the blog layout has changed to match my portfolio. The sidebar needs all its content added back into it, like links etc but check out the collapsing archive plugin I added with its awesome smooth expanding. I don’t know what to think about the change really, okay/hate/don’t care?)

Marc Alcock Lecture

Poster

If you didn’t know, I’m in my 3rd year on a graphic design course and at the moment we are beginning to organise fund raising activities which includes organising visiting lecturers from the creative industry (courtesy of Ste & Tom).

Last Wednesday Marc Alcock kindly came to talk about self promotion and it was really interesting! Especially as he had graduated only 3 years ago, so it was nice to be able to relate more with what he was saying compared to someone who might have graduated much longer ago.

I think everyone who went, found it boosted their morale a bit. Everything is so stressful at the moment, it was really good to listen to someone who has done it all before.

To Do…

To Do

I spend a lot of my time making lists. Sometimes, I may even spend more time making lists than actually doing the things on them! I think I just like the process of making lists as sad as that may seem.

Back to Uni. Sort of.

Crit Notebook

I had ‘the envelope’ from my university this morning containing my summer project, so I’ll be working on those, alongside my original summer plans too!

To keep it short, I will be making a poster about Aids awareness, thinking about the theme of time, researching ‘text as a narrative’ and reading Flatterland by Ian Stewart which I’m a bit apprehensive about but hopefully will be interesting enough so I don’t scan through haha.

Summer Plans

Jun 27.09 / Sketchbook

There are loads of things I want to do over the summer, but lately I’ve noticed I’ve been wasting a lot of time doing nothing worthwhile, so I want to cut all of that out and be super productive!

Summer Plans

These are the main things that I thought a few days ago whilst making my list, I’m sure there’s other things but I’m sure these will do for now.

Dinosaur,
My future fashion designer little sister is helping me (I say helping, I mean most probably making all), make a dinosaur costume. I don’t really have a particular reason for wanting one, I’d just want one!

Website,
I recently finished my portfolio website, but there are a few things bothering me about it so I’ll be trying to sort out those things eventually.

Badge Maker,
I want to purchase a badge maker. Can’t really expand on this anymore?

Paris,
I was planning on going to Paris later on the summer, however plans have fallen through unfortunately :(

Prints,
a. I want to try and get some prints of photographs/illustrations done to perhaps sell.

b. I’ve started really appreciating other people’s artwork, so I think I am going to start to purchase some of my favourite prints to frame and display for some visually pleasant viewing. I have my eye on this Fifi Lapin print in particular!

Clothes,
Planning on revamping my wardrobe over time with versatile pieces. I’ve been spending a lot of time on Lookbook.nu for some style inspiration. I could spend all day browsing! I’ve also been recently thinking about saving up to buy a Miu Miu Bow Satchel as I cannot seem to get over how pretty it is!

Screenprinting,
This is one of my most exciting plans for this year, my Dad and I are going to be putting together a screenprinting station in his workshop/garage! I’m really looking forward to having access to decent screens that don’t have massive tears and holes that have been taped up or have the remainder of someone else’s work that just won’t come off, no matter how many times you clean it. Going to be awesome!

Photos,
I want to take more photographs again as soon as I get my camera lens back. About a month ago I had a stupid accident which involved my camera flying out of its bag and onto a wooden floor, which resulted in my lens breaking. So I’ve been waiting for my insurance company (thank god I had insurance!), to sort it all out and a few days ago I was told it was on its way to them, so I should be out and about snapping again in a week or so.

Sketchbook,
I feel like I’ve been neglecting my sketchbooks since university. I’ve just been churning out pages to fulfil unit requirements for class which isn’t the most inspiring sometimes, so I’m planning on fattening up my own stuff which has been collecting dust.

Scrapbook,
I have a massive pile of old magazines that I just can’t seem to get rid of. I feel like it’d be such a waste? But I don’t actually have any space to store them anymore, so I’m planning of going through them all and cutting out my favourite bits and creating a scrapbook of some sort.

So they are my plans so far. If I ever say I don’t have anything to do during the next 2 months you can give me a good kick.
