Orion Book Covers
Apr 15.10 / Design, Illustration

Another project to show you, this time a series of book hardback covers for some novels by HG Wells. I quite liked designing these covers – I even enjoyed physically making the hardback covers despite a very bad back from sitting on the floor all night surrounding by all sorts of tape, glue and paper.
If you’re interested in these, then there are a few more pictures of them over at my portfolio.

For this project, I’ve got some previous designs that I scrapped for various reasons and as I’ve been posting a lot of finished work lately I’m thinking of posting the designs that didn’t make the cut, sort of to show my process. Thoughts anybody?

Just a small project to show you, playing around with some acronyms of L,B & I (Lost Boys International). I’m most likely going to make it into a bigger project when I have the time because I quite enjoyed drawing these out (they make me feel summery!) so I’ll have more of an explanation to it, but for now they’re just series of posters for the creative agency LBi.

1. The ‘Londoners Through a Lens’ photo exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery in London will be exhibiting from the 14th August, showing photographs throughout the past century.

2. This photo editorial from Teen Vogue is from last month, but I still can’t get over the styling and how pretty Emma Watson is!

3. Illustrations by Sougwen Chung are absolutely beautiful. Her drawings section is also nice to look at too.

4. Tord Boontje jewellery from Artecnica. If you’re not familiar with Tord Boontje, I recommend you take a look at his website.

5. Martin Wilson creates large images from the strips laid out on the contact sheet. Each frame is taken specifically in the right order, so one mistake and he starts again!

6. Littlepixel at Flickr has a great set dedicated to classic record sleeves in the style of Pelican books.

7. How awesome are these vintage Coca Cola cans? See more at Inspiredology.com

8. The Uniform Project is a year long fundraising idea for the Akanksha Foundation by Sheena Matheiken. She has ‘pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion’.

9. Jr.Canest has some pretty good film and animation work at Vimeo. I like ‘A Walk Around Vancouver’ and Crazy Enough – Title Sequence in particular. The first one reminds me of the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is my favourite film of all time!
10. A brilliant stop motion music video involving a lot of chalk, for the Firekites song Autumn Story by Lucinda Schreiber and Yanni Kronenberg.
Marc Johns

I’ve become a major fan of an illustrator that I came across on Flickr a few months ago called Marc Johns. His illustrations are simple but are witty rather amusing and have the ability to cheer me up instantly. I was contemplating buying a print or two from his shop, but he recently announced on his blog that a whole book of his drawings is going to be published in April which I am definitely going to buy as soon as it’s released!
Take a peek at some of the inside pages in his blog entry, A BOOK!!! Serious Drawings to be released in April.
